Concept - LCM and HCF

HCF (Highest common factor):

HCF of two or more numbers is the greatest number that divides each of them exactly.

Factor :
One number is said to be a factor of another when it divides the other exactly.
Eg: 7&8 are factors of 56

Common Factor:

A common factor of two or more numbers is a number that divides each of them exactly.
Eg: 3 is a common factor of 9.18, 21 & 33

HCF (Highest common factor):
HCF of two or more numbers is the greatest number that divides each of them exactly.
Eg: 6 is the HCF of 18 & 24 (2,3,6)

HCF of fractions:

Eg 1 :

find HCF of 54/9, 60/17 and 36/51
The fractions are = 6/1, & 60/17 & 12/17

LCF – Least Common Multiple:

The LCM of two or more given numbers is exactly divisible by each of them.

LCM of fractions:

Eg 1: Find LCM of ½, 5/8

RELATION BETWEEN LCM, HCF & TWO NUMEBRS IS PRODUCT OF NUMBERS = HCF x LCM
Note: If the numbers re co –prime, their HCF is 1.

Practice following examples

1)Find the H.C.F of 108, 360 and 600.

1)12 2) 13 3)14 4)15

Ans :12

Solution: 108=(22*33),

360=(23*32*5)

600=(23*52*3)

Therefore H.C.F. = (22*3) = ( 4 * 3) = 12

3)The least number which is exactly divisible by 5,8,10,12 and 15 is ?

1)60 2)90 3)120 4)80

Ans: 120
